When you look at the history of 90's R&B, you can't mention musicians and ignore the legacy of DeVante Swing. We are talking about a Record Producer, Songwriter, Singer, Video Director and Mentor. As the Founding Member of Jodeci, DeVante for the most part wrote the songs and put the albums together not only producing the songs, but guiding the projects. We also know about his label Swing Mob that at one point, housed some of the most talented rising artist in the 90's. Under his guidance, artist such as Missy Elliot (in a group called Sista at the time), Timberland, Magoo, Ginuwine, Tweet, Playa and others learned from DeVante. After several years running Swing Mob the label folded.
DeVante never really get props for his contribution in regard to 90's music. DeVante is a GREAT producer as well. If you look outside of Jodeci's production, you will see work that DeVante produced for the Above The Rim Soundtrack, Tupac, Al B. Sure, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Mya, DJ Quick, Usher, R. Kelly and the list goes on and on. Music insiders have stated that personal demons hindered DeVante from becoming Babyface or Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
In assessing the career of Devante Swing, even with the success and track record, there is more to be desired. Talent like his is not found on every street corner. I would really like to see a Biopic on him and get the full story on his life. We've heard about the talent, drugs, reckless behavior and roller coaster lifestyle. It's funny how the most talented entertainers appear to constantly fight the reflection in the mirror. Maybe extreme talent was DeVante's gift and curse. Maybe with more focus he wouldn't have stayed a few steps behind some of the greats that his talent matched.
Questions:
1. What is your favorite Jodeci song and album?
2. What is your favorite song produced by DeVante?
3. Do you feel he reached his peak or had more room to grow?
